Total Productive Maintenance

“For the want of a nail the shoe was lost; For the want of a shoe the horse was lost; For the want of a horse the battle was lost; For the failure of battle the kingdom was lost; And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.”

You do not want that to happen to your machine for the want of a brush to clean, or a torch to inspect or a grease gun to lubricate. In other words , ‘TPM’ or Total Productive Maintenance.

Total Productive Maintenance is an innovative concept introduced way back in the 1950s. It still continues to have a great value in the upkeep of machines.

Jishu Hozen is one of the pillars of TPM.3 equally important concepts which form the basis of Jishu Hozen philosophy :

1. Team work between Production and maintenance departments

  1. Maintaining machines before they break down
  2. Team effort from Production and maintenance departments

2. Operator driven reliability

The moment we feel something belongs to us, we start taking care of it and make it more reliable.

3. The person working in close proximity with the machine knows best about the problem trends

That sums up the basic philosophy of TPM. With these concepts as the basis, machine uptime is improved.
